Seed Oil Free at Whole Foods 365: Budget Clean Eating From Their Store Brand

7 min readBy HealthyAgainDiet Team

Whole Foods has a reputation problem: people assume everything there is clean. It is not. Walk through the chip aisle, the dressing section, or the bakery and you will find canola oil, sunflower oil, and soybean oil everywhere — just like any other grocery store.

But Whole Foods' in-house brand, 365 by Whole Foods Market, is genuinely cleaner than most store brands. Their ingredient standards prohibit over 260 ingredients allowed in conventional grocery stores, and while seed oils are not fully banned, a surprising number of 365 products avoid them.

Here is every 365 product we found that passes the seed oil test — plus the Whole Foods items from other brands that are worth the premium.

Cooking Oils and Fats

365 has one of the best oil sections of any grocery store.

  • 365 Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil — Their everyday EVOO. Good quality at a fair price. Works for all cooking up to medium-high heat.
  • 365 Organic Virgin Coconut Oil — Clean, affordable. The large jar is competitive with Costco pricing.
  • 365 Avocado Oil — Check availability by location. When stocked, it is typically Chosen Foods-quality at a slight discount.
  • Kerrygold Butter — Always available at Whole Foods. Grass-fed, clean. Often on sale during Prime Day deals for Amazon Prime members (Whole Foods is owned by Amazon).
  • Fourth & Heart Ghee — Premium ghee brand stocked at most Whole Foods locations. Grass-fed, multiple flavors.
  • Epic Tallow — Whole Foods is one of the few mainstream grocers that stocks beef tallow for cooking. Found in the oils section.

Skip: Any 365 oil labeled "canola" or "vegetable."

Meat and Seafood

Whole Foods' meat counter has the strictest standards of any national grocer — no antibiotics, no added hormones across all meat, even conventional.

  • 365 Organic Ground Beef — Clean, USDA Organic. More affordable than you would expect for organic ground beef.
  • 365 Organic Chicken Breasts — No added solutions, no marinades. Simple.
  • Whole Foods Market Salmon (fresh counter) — Ask for wild-caught. The fresh counter staff can tell you sourcing. Clean and high quality.
  • 365 Frozen Wild-Caught Salmon Fillets — Individually wrapped, convenient, and typically clean (just salmon).
  • 365 Organic Ground Turkey — Clean, no fillers.
  • Epic Provisions Beef/Bison/Venison Bars — Stocked in the snack aisle. No seed oils, high protein.

Skip: Pre-marinated meats and anything from the hot bar or prepared foods section — these frequently contain canola or soybean oil in dressings and marinades.

Dairy and Eggs

  • 365 Organic Eggs — Available in multiple tiers (cage-free, pasture-raised). All are just eggs.
  • 365 Organic Whole Milk Greek Yogurt — Plain variety. Milk and cultures. Clean.
  • 365 Organic Whole Milk — Simple ingredient list.
  • 365 Organic Heavy Cream — Just cream.
  • 365 Block Cheese (Cheddar, Mozzarella) — Block cheese is almost always clean. Shredded versions sometimes add anti-caking agents but rarely seed oils.
  • Straus Family Creamery Butter — Premium grass-fed butter. More expensive than Kerrygold but exceptional quality.

Skip: Flavored yogurts (check each one), most 365 cream cheese varieties.

Nuts and Snacks

  • 365 Raw Almonds — Just almonds. Available in multiple sizes.
  • 365 Raw Cashews — Clean. Good pricing for organic.
  • 365 Raw Walnuts — No oil added.
  • Siete Tortilla Chips — Always stocked at Whole Foods. Avocado oil, grain-free.
  • Jackson's Sweet Potato Chips — Coconut oil or avocado oil varieties. Both clean.
  • Lesser Evil Organic Popcorn — Coconut oil. Found in the snack aisle.
  • Hu Kitchen Chocolate — No seed oils, no refined sugar, no soy lecithin. Whole Foods' most popular clean chocolate.
  • Chomps Beef Sticks — Grass-fed, no seed oils. Usually near checkout or snack aisle.
  • RXBAR — Most flavors are clean (egg whites, nuts, dates). Check each one — some specialty flavors add oils.

Skip: 365 tortilla chips (most contain sunflower or canola oil), 365 trail mixes (roasted nuts often use oil), 365 crackers (most contain seed oils — check each one).

Condiments and Pantry

This is where Whole Foods' brand selection truly shines — they stock clean brands that other grocers do not carry.

  • Primal Kitchen Mayo — Avocado oil mayo. The #1 seed oil free condiment swap. Always stocked.
  • Primal Kitchen Dressings — Ranch, Caesar, Italian, Green Goddess — all avocado oil based. The cleanest bottled dressings available.
  • Sir Kensington's Ketchup — Clean ketchup, no seed oils. Also available in special edition flavors.
  • 365 Organic Ketchup — Tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, salt, spices. Clean and cheap.
  • 365 Organic Yellow Mustard — Clean. Always has been.
  • 365 Organic Marinara Sauce — Check the specific variety. Basic marinara is typically tomatoes + olive oil. Flavored varieties may add canola.
  • Red Boat Fish Sauce — If you cook Asian food, this is the only fish sauce you need. Just anchovies and salt. Stocked at most Whole Foods.
  • Coconut Aminos (365 or Coconut Secret) — Soy sauce replacement. Clean.

Skip: 365 mayonnaise (soybean oil), most 365 salad dressings (canola or sunflower oil base), 365 BBQ sauce (check each — some are clean, some are not).

Bread and Bakery

  • 365 Organic Sourdough — When available, typically clean (flour, water, salt, culture). Always check — formulations vary.
  • Base Culture Bread — Paleo, grain-free bread stocked at Whole Foods. Clean ingredients, no seed oils. Premium priced but unique.
  • Simple Kneads Sourdough — Gluten-free sourdough with clean ingredients. Available at most Whole Foods.

Skip: Most Whole Foods bakery items (muffins, croissants, cookies) contain canola or soybean oil. The in-store bakery is not significantly cleaner than other grocery bakeries.

Frozen Foods

  • 365 Frozen Organic Vegetables — All varieties. Just vegetables. Stock up.
  • 365 Frozen Organic Fruit — All varieties. Just fruit.
  • Cappello's Frozen Pizza — Almond flour crust, no seed oils. One of the only clean frozen pizzas available anywhere.
  • 365 Frozen Wild-Caught Fish — Most plain varieties are clean. Avoid breaded options.

Skip: Most 365 frozen meals, frozen appetizers, and frozen breakfast items contain seed oils.

The Price Reality

Whole Foods is more expensive than Aldi, Walmart, or Costco — that is not a myth. But the 365 brand significantly narrows the gap:

| Item | 365 Price | Comparable at Walmart |

|------|-----------|----------------------|

| Organic EVOO (1L) | $8-10 | $7-9 (Great Value Organic) |

| Organic Eggs (dozen) | $5-6 | $3-5 |

| Organic Ground Beef (lb) | $7-9 | $6-8 |

| Raw Almonds (1 lb) | $7-9 | $6-8 |

The premium is 15-25% on most items — not the 2x markup Whole Foods is often accused of. For clean products specifically, the gap shrinks further because Walmart's "clean" options are limited.

The strategy: Buy staples (meat, eggs, butter, olive oil, frozen vegetables) at 365 prices. Buy specialty clean brands (Primal Kitchen, Siete, Hu Kitchen) at Whole Foods where you can see and compare in person, then reorder from Thrive Market at wholesale once you know what you like.

The Amazon Prime Advantage

Whole Foods is owned by Amazon. Prime members get:

  • Extra 10% off sale prices on hundreds of items weekly
  • Special Prime member deals marked with yellow tags throughout the store
  • Free 2-hour delivery in most metro areas
  • 5% back when paying with the Amazon Prime Visa card

If you already have Prime, the effective discount on Whole Foods purchases is 10-20% — bringing 365 prices close to or below conventional grocery prices for many items.
